ABS Filament

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

High-temp, impact-resistant filament for serious engineering parts

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the classic engineering-grade 3D printing filament. It's what LEGO bricks are made of. ABS handles higher temperatures than PLA (won't warp in a hot car), takes impact without cracking, and can be post-processed with acetone for a smooth, professional finish. It's more demanding to print than PLA or PETG — but the results are worth it for parts that need to survive harsh conditions.

✅ Pros

  • High heat tolerance — won't warp in a hot car (~100°C HDT)
  • Impact resistant — flex before break
  • Acetone smoothing for professional surface finish
  • Lightweight for its strength
  • Great for gears, brackets, enclosures
  • Industry-standard engineering material

⚠️ Cons

  • Warps without an enclosure — difficult on open-frame printers
  • Fumes — print in ventilated area
  • Requires higher bed temp (100–110°C)
  • Less bridging ability than PETG
  • Poor UV resistance outdoors long-term
  • More difficult to calibrate than PLA

Common Use Cases

Best for: Engineers and makers who need parts that survive heat, impact, and real mechanical stress.

ABS Filament — FAQ

Where can I buy ABS filament in Utah?

Forgely Roy carries ABS filament at our Roy, UT store — 5519 S 1900 W, Roy, UT 84067. We serve customers from Ogden, Layton, Clearfield, and all of northern Utah. Open Mon–Fri 11–6, Sat 11–3.

Do I need an enclosure to print ABS?

For reliable results, yes. ABS warps when temperature gradients form during printing. An enclosure keeps the ambient temperature stable, dramatically reducing warping and layer delamination. If you don't have an enclosure and are having ABS issues, our technicians can help troubleshoot.

What is acetone smoothing with ABS?

ABS dissolves slightly in acetone. You can brush or vapor-smooth printed ABS parts to eliminate layer lines and achieve a high-gloss, injection-molded look. No other common filament material does this as well.

Is ABS better than PETG for hot environments?

Yes — ABS has a heat deflection temperature around 100°C vs PETG's ~80°C. For parts that will be inside a car in summer, near a heat source, or in mechanical systems that generate heat, ABS is the safer choice.

Is ABS safe to print indoors?

ABS releases styrene fumes during printing, which are irritating and potentially harmful with prolonged exposure. Always print in a ventilated space, ideally with an enclosure that has a built-in HEPA/carbon filter. Don't print ABS in bedrooms or unventilated offices.
