Best 3D Printing Filament for Outdoor Use (2026 Guide)
Printing outdoor parts in Utah? Learn which filaments survive UV, heat, and freeze-thaw cycles. PETG, ASA, and ABS compared for outdoor 3D printing.
Utah weather is no joke. From scorching summer days in Roy and Ogden to freezing nights and intense high-altitude UV, outdoor 3D printed parts need to be tough. Here's what actually works.
Why Standard PLA Fails Outdoors
PLA is great for indoor prints, but it has a glass transition temperature of around 60°C. In a parked car on a Utah summer day, dashboard temps can exceed 80°C — your PLA part will warp and fail. UV radiation also degrades PLA over months, making it brittle and discolored.
Bottom line: Don't use PLA for anything that lives outside or in a hot car.
Best Choices for Outdoor Prints
1. PETG — The Everyday Outdoor Champion
PETG is our most-recommended material for outdoor use at Forgely Roy. It balances printability, UV resistance, and strength better than almost any other material.
- UV resistance: Good (degrades slowly over years, not months)
- Heat resistance: ~80°C Tg — survives most outdoor conditions in Utah
- Impact resistance: Excellent — won't shatter in cold weather
- Water resistance: Very good
- Ease of printing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (slightly trickier than PLA)
Best for: Outdoor brackets, plant labels, mailbox parts, drone frames, utility clips, anything that needs to survive a Utah summer.
2. ASA — The Outdoor Specialist
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) was specifically engineered for outdoor use. It's essentially weatherproof ABS.
- UV resistance: Excellent — ASA is used in automotive exterior trim for this reason
- Heat resistance: ~100°C — handles direct sun on dark-colored parts
- Impact resistance: Very good
- Ease of printing: ⭐⭐⭐ (requires enclosure, prone to warping)
Best for: Parts in direct sunlight, roof mounts, outdoor signs, automotive exterior mods.
Tip: Print ASA in an enclosure at 240–260°C nozzle, 100°C bed. Drafts will cause warping and delamination.
3. ABS — Functional but Finicky
ABS has good heat and chemical resistance but its UV performance is poor. It will yellow and become brittle in direct sun within months. Use ASA instead if UV matters.
- UV resistance: Poor (yellows/brittles within 6 months of direct sun)
- Heat resistance: ~100°C
- Ease of printing: ⭐⭐⭐ (needs enclosure, strong fumes — good ventilation required)
Best for: Shaded outdoor locations, functional mechanical parts where UV isn't a concern.
4. TPU / Flexible — Weather-Proof Seals & Gaskets
TPU is excellent for outdoor gaskets, grommets, protective covers, and anything that needs to flex in cold temperatures without cracking.
- UV resistance: Moderate
- Cold flexibility: Excellent — stays flexible down to -20°C
- Ease of printing: ⭐⭐⭐ (requires slow speeds, direct drive preferred)
Quick Comparison Table
| Material | UV Resistance | Heat Resistance | Print Difficulty | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | ❌ Poor | ❌ ~60°C | Easy | Low |
| PETG | ✅ Good | ✅ ~80°C | Moderate | Low-Mid |
| ASA | ✅✅ Excellent | ✅✅ ~100°C | Hard | Mid |
| ABS | ⚠️ Poor UV | ✅✅ ~100°C | Hard | Mid |
| TPU | ✅ Moderate | ⚠️ ~60–80°C | Moderate | Mid |
Color Matters for Outdoor Prints
Dark colors absorb more heat — a black PETG part in direct July sun in Utah can exceed its Tg faster than you'd expect. For hot outdoor locations, use lighter colors or switch to ASA.
