When to Use Each Filament

Choose PLA When...

Ease & aesthetics matter most

  • You are new to 3D printing and want reliable results
  • The part is decorative, a prototype, or a display model
  • You need fine detail and a smooth surface finish
  • The print will stay indoors and away from heat
  • You want the widest range of colors and specialty finishes

Choose PETG When...

Strength & durability matter most

  • The part is functional and needs impact resistance
  • It will be used outdoors or exposed to moisture
  • You need moderate heat resistance (up to ~80°C)
  • The print needs to flex slightly without snapping
  • You are making mechanical enclosures or brackets

The Verdict

PLA is the go-to filament for most people. If you are printing prototypes, models, cosplay props, or anything that lives indoors, PLA delivers the best results with the least effort. It is forgiving, affordable, and available in more colors than any other material.

PETG is the better choice when durability matters. Functional parts, outdoor enclosures, tool holders, and anything that might take a hit should be printed in PETG. It is only slightly harder to dial in than PLA and the strength improvement is significant.

Many experienced makers keep both filaments on hand and choose based on the job. That is exactly what we recommend — and we stock both at Forgely Roy so you can grab what you need on the spot.
