Resin vs FDM 3D Printing: Which Is Right for You?
FDM or resin? Both technologies have real strengths and serious tradeoffs. This guide helps you decide which type of 3D printer fits your budget, workflow, and goals.
Two major technologies dominate desktop 3D printing: FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and resin (MSLA/SLA). They look similar from the outside, but they work completely differently, produce different results, and require different workflows. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose.
How They Work
FDM (Filament-Based)
FDM printers melt plastic filament through a hot nozzle and deposit it layer by layer. Machines like the Bambu Lab P1S, Creality Ender 3, and Prusa MK4 are FDM. Filament comes on spools — PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, and dozens of specialty materials.
Resin (MSLA/SLA)
Resin printers use UV light (either a laser or an LCD screen) to cure liquid photopolymer resin one layer at a time. The build plate lifts up as each layer hardens in the vat below. Machines like the Elegoo Mars and Anycubic Photon series are MSLA resin printers.
Key Differences at a Glance
| FDM | Resin (MSLA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Detail / Resolution | Good (layer lines visible) | Excellent (near-smooth) |
| Build Volume | Large (300mm+ available) | Small–Medium |
| Material Variety | Very high (PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, CF...) | Lower (standard, ABS-like, water-washable) |
| Post-Processing | Minimal (remove supports, sand) | Required (wash + cure, gloves, ventilation) |
| Mess / Odor | Low | High (resin is toxic until cured) |
| Entry Price | $200–$600 for good machines | $150–$400 for good machines |
| Consumable Cost | $15–$30/kg filament | $25–$60/liter resin |
| Speed | Fast for large parts | Fast per layer (slow for tall parts) |
When to Choose FDM
- You're making functional parts, enclosures, brackets, jigs, or structural components
- You need a large build volume (models bigger than 6" × 6")
- You want to print in flexible materials (TPU) or high-temp materials (ABS, ASA)
- You have kids or you're in an enclosed space (PLA is food-safe and low-odor)
- You're new to 3D printing and want a forgiving learning curve
- You need replacement parts, cosplay props, or practical prints
When to Choose Resin
- You need fine detail: jewelry, miniatures, figurines, dental models, prototypes with tight tolerances
- Surface finish matters more than strength — resin parts look incredible out of the machine
- You're okay with the post-processing workflow (wash station, UV curing box, proper ventilation)
- You have a dedicated workspace away from kids and pets (uncured resin is a skin/eye irritant)
- Build volume isn't a constraint — you're printing small, highly detailed objects
