How to Fix 3D Printer Stringing and Oozing (Complete Guide)
Stringing and oozing ruining your prints? Learn the exact slicer settings and hardware fixes to eliminate strings and blobs. Expert repair tips from Forgely Roy in Roy, Utah.
Stringing (also called "hairy prints" or oozing) is one of the most common issues in FDM printing. Those thin wispy threads between parts ruin detail and finish. The good news: it's almost always fixable with the right settings.
What Causes Stringing?
When your nozzle travels over open air between printed sections, molten filament oozes out and leaves strings. The root causes are:
- Retraction distance too low — not pulling filament back far enough before travel
- Print temperature too high — runny filament oozes more
- Travel speed too slow — more time for ooze during movement
- Wet filament — moisture makes PLA/PETG stringy
- Worn or leaking nozzle — cracked nozzle tip or loose heat break
Fix #1: Retraction Settings (Most Important)
Retraction pulls filament back into the nozzle before travel moves, cutting off the ooze at the source. These are starting points — tune from here:
Direct Drive Extruder (e.g., Bambu Lab, Prusa MK4)
| Retraction Distance | 0.5–1.5mm |
| Retraction Speed | 30–50mm/s |
Direct drive needs very short retraction — going longer causes jams.
Bowden Extruder (e.g., Creality Ender 3, some Elegoo)
| Retraction Distance | 4–7mm |
| Retraction Speed | 40–60mm/s |
Longer tube = more slack = more retraction needed.
Fix #2: Lower Your Print Temperature
Higher temp = runnier plastic = more stringing. Try dropping your nozzle temp by 5°C increments:
- PLA: Try 195–210°C (many people run too hot at 220°C+)
- PETG: 230–245°C (runs hotter but still needs tuning)
- TPU: 220–230°C
Print a temperature tower to find your sweet spot — print one layer at each temperature and pick the setting that looks cleanest.
Fix #3: Increase Travel Speed
Faster travel = less time for ooze to drip. Set travel speed to 150–200mm/s in your slicer (this is separate from print speed). Modern printers like the Bambu X1C can do 300mm/s travel — use it.
Fix #4: Enable "Avoid Crossing Perimeters" / "Combing"
This setting forces the nozzle to travel over already-printed surfaces (not open air) whenever possible. Even with some ooze, it won't leave visible strings between parts. Find it in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, or Orca Slicer.
Fix #5: Dry Your Filament
Moisture-absorbed filament fizzes and pops — both cause stringing and surface blobs. If you've had a spool open for more than a couple weeks in Utah's variable humidity, dry it:
- Food dehydrator: 45°C for 4–8 hours (best method)
- Oven at lowest setting: Leave door cracked, monitor temp carefully
- Filament dryer box: PrintDry or similar — ~$30, keeps filament dry during printing

Hardware Check: When Settings Don't Help
If you've tuned settings and still get bad stringing, the issue may be mechanical:
- Partially clogged nozzle — buildup causes inconsistent flow and blobs (see our guide on clearing clogs)
- PTFE tube gap at hot end — if the tube doesn't seat fully against the nozzle, a pocket forms that traps and oozes plastic. Re-seat or replace the tube.
- Worn nozzle — nozzles degrade over time, especially with abrasive filaments. Brass nozzles need replacing every 200–400 print hours.
- Loose heat break — loose connection between the cold and hot zones causes uncontrolled heat creep and ooze.
If you suspect a hardware issue, bring your printer in to Forgely Roy in Roy, Utah. Our flat-rate repair is $45/hr — diagnostic is included in the first hour.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- ✅ Retraction enabled? (Surprisingly common oversight)
- ✅ Retraction distance appropriate for direct vs bowden?
- ✅ Temperature at or below the top of recommended range?
- ✅ Travel speed 150mm/s or higher?
- ✅ Combing/avoid perimeters enabled?
- ✅ Filament dry? (Especially humid summer or post-snowstorm in Utah)
- ✅ Nozzle clean and not worn?
